Following the recent deaths of Hilda Ogden out of Coronation Street and King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, rumours abound that the two were lovers who met and fell in love on the set of ‘The Street’ in 1969 during a state visit by the late king, who had requested a tour of the Weatherfield set near Manchester so that he could meet the cast of his favourite soap opera.
A ‘Street’ insider told us: “You could tell there was chemistry between The King and Hilda right from the start. He had requested a look inside The Rovers and Hilda was sitting in the corner of the snug with Martha Longhurst and Ena Sharples, having a milk stout.
“As soon as he spotted Hilda, he made a beeline for her. He kissed her hand gently, and in return, Hilda offered him one of her crisps from a packet on the table. If you ask me, the two of them were smitten from that moment on.
“I know for a fact that she went to Thailand for all her holidays and would come back with really expensive diamond necklaces, and even the odd tiara. Her husband, Stan wasn’t at all happy and I reckon he had a pretty good idea what was going on. He used to kick up fuck about it to Ray Langton and Len Fairclough all the time”
Friends of the couple are convinced, that following The King’s recent illness, he and Hilda made a suicide pact and that if he died, Hilda would take her own life. Tragically, this is definitely what she did.
This latest celebrity suicide pact comes just a few months after Prince Philip made a bungled attempt to take his own life after learning of the death of his longtime lover, that little bloke who lived inside R2 D2’ out of Star Wars.
